Visual Artist, Artivist, and Co-owner of the Sawyer Gallery and Studios
Born and raised in the ravines of the San Salvador Volcano, Geraldina is an accidental immigrant, having been left separated from her family and country when the Civil War erupted in 1979. She is a Rice Alumna '83 with a BA in architecture/art/art history and a '85 BArch. Having studied art from and early age with Violeta Bonilla, a protégé of Diego Rivera, and returned to it after 25 years in residential design. She is dedicated to the empowerment of women and Latinos, through her art, performance, and leadership. She is the co-founder of Advocates for a Latino Museum in Houston and uniting all Latino artists in the region, creating a movement to support fellow artists, represent and give voice to pan-latinidad, and build a home for the Latino culture. Her art and activism- artivism- is what defines her, and empowerment of all women to fight for life on the planet is her goal. She represented El Salvador at the UNESCO Latin American and Caribbean week art exhibit in Paris in 2023. She is an advocate for Houston and is an integral member of many boards including DePelchin Children's Center, HGO community, Buffalo Bayou Partnership, The Tapia Center at Rice. She and her husband Scott are active in the Rice community.
